Karl graduated from Sheffield University in 1980 with an honours degree in Civil and Structural Engineering. Since then he has gained over 33 years experience designing, supervising and constructing highway, public open space and drainage schemes.

Having played rugby union for over 25 years he is now too frail to play but is a vice president of Hull Ionians where he still supports and enjoys the social side of the game. He also enjoys horse riding but is mainly reduced to the role of groom for his wife.
