A Travel Plan (TP) is a strategy to promote sustainable travel at a site, with the aim of reducing the number of car trips. Sustainable travel modes include active travel, such as walking, cycling and wheeling, but also includes car sharing and public transport (bus, rail, underground).
A well-prepared Travel Plan demonstrates how a development supports sustainable travel, setting out clear aims, targets, measures and monitoring to support long-term behaviour change.
Travel Plans are typically supported by a Travel Plan Coordinator (TPC), who is appointed to manage implementation, monitoring and review, ensuring objectives are met and acting as a key liaison for sustainable travel initiatives.
The need for a Travel Plan often aligns with whether a Transport Assessment (TA) or Transport Statement (TS) is required, so depends on the scale and nature of your scheme.
As a guide, residential development of around 50-80 dwellings or more normally require a TP, although this varies by authority, and there can be site-specific reasons for one. TP reports may be needed to validate a planning application and/or to discharge a specified planning condition or S106 obligation.
Separate to planning applications, we also produce TP reports to obtain credits through schemes like BREEAM and can develop tailored Travel Plans for organisations looking to encourage sustainable travel among staff and visitors.
The focus is always on meeting local and national requirements, while avoiding unnecessary cost or overly complex commitments. You can read more about the LTP approach in terms of advice, minimising your costs, transparency and responsiveness.
LTP has delivered hundreds of Travel Plans across the UK, covering a wide range of development types and scales, and can support planning applications for a variety of schemes.
