Vehicle Tracking (Swept Path Analysis)

What is vehicle tracking?

Vehicle tracking, also referred to as Swept Path Analysis (SPA), involves using drawings to simulate whether there is sufficient space for vehicles to manoeuvre.

Specialist software is used to test CAD layouts and model a wide range of vehicle types, including refuse collection vehicles, fire tenders, cars and HGVs. Selecting the most appropriate vehicle is an important part of the process, particularly where vehicle types vary between locations (for example, refuse vehicles used by different authorities).

Bespoke vehicle models can also be developed by LTP where required, for example to reflect a specific vehicle type or to account for unusual loads being transported.

When do you need vehicle tracking?

Vehicle tracking is required for most highway designs and is fundamental to many design decisions. It can influence the choice of junction type, layout and geometry at both preliminary and detailed design stages (see highway design).

Vehicle tracking is also used to assess layouts produced by architects and developers. Typical checks include ensuring that delivery vehicles can manoeuvre within a car park, or that refuse vehicles can safely access and turn within residential developments.

Highway authorities usually require vehicle tracking evidence to support planning applications. As a result, it is often included within Transport Statements (TS) and Transport Assessments (TA), although it can also be provided as a standalone exercise (see transport assessments & statements).
