What is junction modelling?

Junction modelling is used to understand how changes to layout or traffic flows affect capacity at a junction. Validated and calibrated models can be used to predict future levels of queueing and congestion.

There are three industry-standard software tools used to model junction capacity, including:

PICADY – Priority junctions (part of the ‘Junctions’ software)
ARCADY – Roundabouts (part of the ‘Junctions’ software)
LinSig – Signalised junctions and small networks

LTP has a team of experienced modellers who are proficient in the use and interpretation of these specialist software packages.

When is junction modelling require?

LTP typically undertakes junction modelling for developments to test the suitability of an access design, or to assess whether key off-site junctions can accommodate additional traffic. This work is often a core part of a Transport Assessment (TA) supporting a planning application.

Junction modelling is also used to design and test junction improvements, either as part of a study for a local authority or to develop mitigation schemes for a development.

Our modellers and engineers work collaboratively to iteratively test design options, ensuring that schemes meet design requirements and provide sufficient capacity.

This is particularly important for junction modelling, where the application of the National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF) ‘severe’ impact test can vary. Our experience across the UK allows us to interpret modelling outputs in the appropriate local context.

Traffic survey data is often required for modelling and can add cost and time to a project. Where possible, we identify suitable existing data, and when new surveys are required, we work with trusted suppliers to ensure an efficient and proportionate approach.
